You've probably heard about, or even worked in an organisation that uses the Partner model. It's used by humungous multinational firms right down to small local firms in accounting, legal, engineering, IT, advertising and management consulting firms to name a few.
Its where a small group of very highly remunerated Partners are the owners and "rainmakers". They manage key relationships with the largest clients accounts. They work collaboratively to leverage (introduce and sell) each others' services into those key accounts.
The Partners employ and contract others to deliver the work at a lower cost, so that the Partners takes a margin. Over time, those clients become the major ongoing revenue streams for the firm with services being provided by many people across the firm. On the largest multinational accounts, many of those employees and contractors, and even sometimes the Partners, will never meet or know about one another working on the vast array of projects across the globe.
